Solar Batteries

If you get a good amount of sunlight on your home, you can use it to power your home and significantly reduce the amount you spend on electricity bills. Whereas, if you want to save some of that power so you can use it later, solar battery systems in Brisbane are your best friend. Interest in battery storage for solar energy among Brisbane residents has skyrocketed in the last year, with a reporting of 90% increase in battery-related traffic in the past few years.

Deciding to get a solar battery is of course a big decision. We break down the benefits of having a battery and the type you should look into getting. If you’d rather speak to us directly to get some help with your decision-making, you can contact us directly here

What are the benefits of having a solar battery system?

Solar Battery systems maximise the value of your solar system by storing any excess energy generated during the day. You can use this energy during the night, when your roof doesn’t have access to sunlight. Secondly, with factors like the size of the system, you can cut down your dependance on grid energy almost completely. For solar systems that generate more electricity than the battery can store, the excess is exported into the grid by which you can get a credit on your electricity bill for the amount exported.

Save power for the night

A lot of consumers think that having a battery can protect you in the event of a blackout. Since grid-connected systems have something called ‘anti-islanding protection’ which means that the grid and any engineers working on the lines must be protected from ‘islands’ of electricity generation (like your solar panels) from pumping excess power into the lines. The simplest way to provide this type of protection is to shut down entirely. So when the grids have a blackout, your solar PV system shuts down to, leaving your home without any power.

Feed-in Tariffs

Feed-in tariffs are a government initiative to encourage homeowners to install solar panels on their homes. The concept is simple – the energy produced from your solar panel is used in your home, any excess is exported to the energy grid. This excess can help you earn credits.

Secondly, If you live in South East Queensland, you may get a market feed-in tariff directly from your electricity retailer. There are no mandated rates for electricity exported to the grid, which is why most electricity retailers offer you competitive feed-in tariff rates. Make sure you look and ask around so you can secure the best deal!

What type of solar battery system should you get?

Here are the following user types and usage:

Estimated Usage

Recommended battery system size

Young adults/Older Family

  • Typical usage focused early in the morning and in the evenings.

  • More usage during the day and weekends

Retirees/ Young Family

  • Someone at home during the day

  • Some heating/cooling throughout the summer and winter

Big energy user

  • Swimming pool

  • Electric water heater

  • 5 or more people in the house

  • Air conditioning in the summer and winter

When it comes to the brands we trust, we use batteries provided by Tesla Powerwall and LG Chem Resu. For large battery systems with storage of 13.5kWh, we use Tesla Powerwall and for medium battery systems with storage of 6.5kWh, we use LG Chem Resu.

How much do they cost?

Batteries are still a fairly expensive investment. Some batteries have a payback period of over 10 years, which can be longer than the warranty period. Currently, most commonly used lithium-ion batteries and a hybrid inverter will cost you between $8,000 to $15,000. We highly recommend doing your research before deciding to make this investment. Connected Grid vs Off-Grid

Connected Grid

Connected grid can refer to two things. You may have installed a solar panel system on your roof and are making the best use of your renewable energy. If you decide to use a solar battery system for your home, while still being connected to a grid, this is also called connected grid.

We generally recommend this method of energy consumption. This system has no connection to the main electricity grid. All the home’s power comes from solar panels, and possibly some other types of power generation as well, such as wind. The battery is the main power source at night and on low-sunlight days. The final back-up is usually a diesel-powered generator, which may also kick in when there’s a sudden high demand for power (such as when a pump starts up).

These systems are usually much more complex and expensive than grid-connected systems. They need more solar and battery capacity than a typical grid-connected system and may also need inverters capable of higher loads to cope with peak demands. Homes that run off-grid need to be particularly energy-efficient and the load demand needs to be well-managed throughout the day.

Such systems generally only make sense for remote properties where a grid connection isn’t available or would be prohibitively expensive to install.

Off-grid, however, has no connection to the main electricity grid. Furthermore, all the power comes from your solar panels and maybe some other power generation methods like wind. Some off-grid aficionados like to use a diesel powered generator for any high-powered systems in their homes. Off-grid is way more complex and expensive. It requires a lot of management. Most homes that go off-grid are remote properties where a grid connection doesn’t exist.
